Summary

Having covered a few different tools, it is my hope that you are now armed with enough information to tune your disks to your preference. There are many other options to explore with all the packages covered here.

Whether it’s making sure that your syslog server is capable of surviving a user going overboard with disk usage, or you need to quickly delete lots of small files, your new knowledge might just save the day at some point in the future. There are always data and backup issues that arise when you least expect it and usually when you are at your busiest.

Finally, the -y switch for fsck is a godsend when you need to get a production system back online quickly. I’m no longer taken by surprise at how many years old some Unix-like boxes are; you know the ones that are in production and haven’t had a reboot for two years. I look forward to running fsck -y via a physical console on an unhappy ext2 filesystem, in order to help a server boot up again, in another few years time. I’ll have to remember to warn the customer about inode limitations too.
